Trade Show Tip Monday – Square

by tracibrowne on October 10, 2011

Last week on the #a2zusergroup chat led by Dave Lutz we were discussing great uses for iPads on the trade show floor.  I wanted to share with you a tool/app that I brought up there.

Square

This is an absolutely amazing little tool plugs in to your iPhone, iPad or Android and allows you to swipe credit cards for payment.  Funds are deposited directly into your bank account within 12-24 hours.  There is no charge for the swiper and a flat 2.75 percent transaction fee for all credit cards.  No need for an expensive merchant account or complicated equipment.

But wait, there’s more!  There is a limit of $1000 per transaction if the card is NOT present and it is entered manually.  If the card IS present to swipe there is no limit other than that of the card holder.

I am going to recommend this to all my exhibitors at our consumer show.  I’m also using it myself to process booth payments and conference payments.  I love the simplicity.  I’m thinking about getting another one for my personal account…now when my friends stick me with the tab at a cash only restaurant I can say, no problem, I’ll just charge your card for you!

Traci, thanks for bringing up “Square” during the a2z tweetchat and again in this post. Since you brought it up, I’ve seen a number of references to it. What a great idea for someone who needs an occasional or very portable solution.

I am now using square to process payments for EventCamp East Coast and I’m loving it. It’s a great solution for on-site registrations as well. That and if I get one for personal use, next time my friends say they forgot to bring cash to dinner I can say, “no problem, just give me your card and I’ll charge your portion of dinner!”
